SPRING WASHER DIN 127

This type of washer has a ring split and it bent in a certain way to give it a helical form. As a result, the washer can exert a spring-like force between the head of the fastener and the substrate, which ensures that the washer remains rigid against the substrate as well as the bolt thread stays firm against the substrate or nut thread, thereby allowing more resistance (against rotation) and creating friction. Because the spring washer varieties are a left hand helix, they allow the threaded to be tightened in clockwise direction (right-to-left). When the bolt is moved in an anti-clockwise direction, the raised edge cuts into the underside of the nut or bolt and the part it was bolted to, thereby creating resistance to rotation. As a result, spring washers are deemed as useless on left-hand threads and hard surfaces. Also, one must bear in mind that spring washers are not to be used with flat washers as they are not compatible with each other, as this does not allow the spring washer to cut into the component that will resist the turning action.
